Former Italian Somaliland, Somalia took the independence on July 1st, 1960, Somalia became independent and a government was formed by Somalia people and 1969, the army seized the power after a coup d’état against the government and the president was assassinated.
Before the independence, the country was the Trust Territory of Somalia between 1950 and 1960 under a UN mandate.
British Somaliland became independent on June 26, 1960 as Somaliland State and five days later, the Trust Territory of Somalia took the independence. On July 1, 1960, the two territories united to form the Republic of Somalia, with Mogadishu as the capital and Hargesa the second biggest town.
Today, Somalia is a Federal Republic, the country is located in the Horn of Africa and has the border with Ethiopia, Kenya, the Indian Ocean, the Gulf of Aden and Djibouti until Somaliland will be recognized. Actually, Somalia has the longest coastline on the continent mainland.

In the late 19th century, through a succession of treaties with these kingdoms, the British and Italians gained control of parts of the coast and established the colonies of British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland.
