Early archaeological work reveals that Kurru was a well fortified city with walls contemporary to the next oldest tombs estimated from 890 BC to 860BC). In the 25th dynasty, the reign of King Biye in 747 BC was the first Nubian king to claim the title of pharaoh, ordering the construction of his pyramid, others to follow later. In this cemetery, there are two burying chambers, going down stairs where  the paintings on the walls are well preserved. The 1st pyramid was for the King Tanut Amani, the 2nd one for his mother Queen Kalahata. A short 5 minute drive, there is a whole valley filled with petrified trees.

Jebel Barkal
Jebel Barkal, a massive isolated sand stone mountain 40 km downstream from the 4th cataract. 100 meter high and 200 meter long, with prominent cliffs and spectacular pinnacle 75 meters, this natural monument was a source of sacred myths among early Egyptians and Nubians. During the new kingdom and through the Nubian 25th dynasty, when Nubians ruled Egypt, Jebel Barkal town was known as Napata, its beautiful temples and palaces on the foot of the mountain will remain as the primary sanctuary of the kingdom where Nubian kings claimed their royal power and had to be confirmed and crowned by the god Amun who dwelt within the mountain. Later in 1870 ACE, the great musician Giuseppe Verdi was inspired when excavations revealed Nubians ruled Egypt from Napata whereupon he composed the legendary Opera Aida. There is a huge Amun temple, the temple of goddess Mut built within the mountain and the pyramids west of the mountains. Later in the afternoon, climb up the mountain of Jebel Barkal and enjoy the sunset overlooking temples and pyramids and the grand Nile where gods and goddesses once prevailed.
